Macomb Orchard Trail Friends Group
Meeting Minutes for Tuesday, August 27, 2002

Meeting is called to order and welcome visitors.

July’s meeting minutes approved.

The treasurer’s report shows an end of July balance of $4,959.26.

Trail Commission Status

A presentation was made by a consultant from RTC. Carlisle/Wortman Assc. Inc. of Ann Arbor was hired by the commission using some of the grant money.

Envisioned is a 6 month Master Plan for the 1st section of the trail

Looking to put community workshops together within the next 2 months for input gathering.

Formal work should be beginning in the spring of 2003

They will be awarding a $100 savings bond for a student in a Macomb County high school or home school to design a computer-generated logo for the trail.

It does not appear they will be renaming the trail, though.

The grain elevator in Armada, which is located in the trail right-of-way, is willing to deed more land on the opposite side to the trail and pay Armada Township’s share of the interlocal fee of $25,000.

There was tragic destruction of wildlife habitat discovered near the Ford Motor Company in Romeo next to a certified trout stream. It sounds like the contractor who unnecessarily destroyed the wildlife will be penalized significantly and will have to replace quite a lot of trees and vegetation. We need to keep an eye out to help protect the habitat along the trail from this sort of thing.

Answering Machine and Email – none

LED light sales talk is on hold

Armada’s latest meeting was quick and there was not much discussed.

Thanks go to Joyce Monte, Suzie Martin and Lee Sorensen who volunteered some time at the Bill’s Run Richmond Run in August. They sold a sweatshirt and some trail mix.

Peach Festival – Rich Platz needs to be reimbursed the $20 for the insurance for a booth. Rich and John will set up. Thanks to the Clinton River Riders volunteering to help man the booth!

Good Old Days – We need volunteers!

Applefest is October 12 &13 at the Armada High School. We need volunteers and hope we get a good spot (preferably by Achatz pies!).

Dave Rumohr says we need business cards for the board members and membership cards for members next year. Come up with ideas for designs.

Dave will also draft a letter of intent, what the Friend’s group is willing to do for the trail, to be included in the Master Plan.

Lee will purchase storage containers for the trail mix and be reimbursed as soon as possible.

There was discussion about redesigning the newsletter to look a little more like the PollyAnn Trail newsletter. Maybe we could include more pictures.

Lee has approached the Romeo/Washington Chamber of Commerce hoping to get on their agenda. We feel this group could us help nudge the politicians along.

John Tarantino made a convenient list of government officials to contact to pass out at the booth.

Meeting adjourned.

Next official meeting is Tuesday, September 24, 2002 at Camp Rotary.
