Meeting Minutes for Tuesday, June 25, 2002

Call to order

Welcome visitors and introduction.

June’s meeting minutes approved with additional information to be posted:

o We are advised to vote YES on proposed new state law to allow DNR’s Michigan’s Natural Resources Trust Fund (MNRTF) to earn more income on its oil drilling revenue and spend more on projects such as trails (a source of grants for MOT).

o TEA 3 – This law is also up for renewal in 2003 (efforts need to be taken now though). This is the major source of present and on-going grant funding for trails.

o Please contact your congressman and senators to support reauthorization of laws that funnel transportation dollars to non-motorized transportation such as trails (a source of MOT grants).

The treasurer’s report shows an end of May balance of $5,005.00. This includes a $150 expense for printing new brochures.

A motion to supply $50 for the secretary to cover printing and postage to be replenished as necessary is made by Dennis Tipsword and seconded by John Tarantino.

Chuck Mabley complements those working on the thorough trail inventory (Ted Gondert and Dave Rumohr).

Old Business

Membership status (Dave Rumohr)

o We received about 12 renewals in the mail since last meeting.

o The renewal postcards sent went over well. We are now at about 100 paid members.

Trail Commission Status

o The first meeting was spent mostly organizing. Officers were chosen as follows: Peter Lund, chairman; Dave Diegel, treasurer; Jill Smith, secretary.

o The next meeting will be the 4th Tuesday in July at 10 a.m. in Washington.

o Ford Motor Company in Romeo came forward right away at the meeting. Since the trail bisects their property they are willing to have the trail follow the edge of their property.

Answering Machine and Email – We received a phone call saying VPM Studios has been asked by the county to do a video. This has not been done yet.

A new source, Annie’s Bakery in Missouri, has been found by Gale Barr for trail mix. We can order in small quantities at a reasonable price.

o A motion is made by Dennis Tipsword to buy 100 bags, 50 fruit/nuts and 50 regular, to sell for $2 pending insurance advice. It is suggested we run this venture by our insurance agency first to see if there are any legal issues dealing with food.

o Gale will place order and be reimbursed.

On the subject of LED lights Dennis Tipsword says we can buy them for about $1.50 and sell them for $3. We will table this discussion and gather more information.

There has been no change considering Armada Township’s status on the trail as reported by Gale Barr. She has requested to be on their next agenda. There has been property purchased along the trail just west of the village by True Road.

Dan Keifer sent a Thank You note for our involvement in National Trail Day on behalf of the Friends of the Clinton River Trail.

Richmond publicity

o Chuck will see if we can put up a sign in Richmond marking the MOT.

o We will also see if we can find someone to man a booth at Bill’s Run for a couple hours.

It was suggested we be represented at the Dodge Park fair the weekend of August 3 (Friday-Sunday).

Richmond Township’s referendum has been shot down due to questions on the language.

Lee Sorensen supplied copies of synopses of information he gathered at the Grand Rapids Conference.

Peach Festival - Dave Rumohr makes a motion to attend this pending we can staff the booth.

Richmond Good Old Days – A similar motion made by Chuck Mabley was made to pay the $40 fee to attend Good Old Days festival. Christine Hamilton will work on the scheduling.

Applefest in Armada is October 12-13 at the high school. A similar motion was passed to attend this. Lee will get application.

Lee Tait wants to tell everyone there is a new place to fly your model airplanes right across from Wolcott Mill.

Dennis Tipsword will chair the next meeting due to Lee Sorensen and the Rumohrs attending the Michigander.

Dennis Tipsword can attend Trail Commission meeting on July 23.

All officers signed the thank you certificate for Johnny Appleseed.

Anthony Casasanta and other county officials recently went to Traverse City to make a presentation for some grant money to the DNR.

Meeting adjourned.

Next official meeting is Tuesday, July 23, 2002 at Camp Rotary.
